Former Assistant Secretary at the Office of the Former President Akufo Addo, Ibrahim Adjei, has strongly criticised the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over its handling of the summons issued to former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, describing the move as “totally unwarranted and unnecessary.”

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, he condemned the tone and posture of the OSP’s public communication, accusing the office of turning a sensitive legal matter into political theatre.

“It was unnecessary, it was more playing to the gallery. The drama that was associated with that kind of communication by the OSP was unwarranted and unnecessary. They could have handled it differently,” he said.

His comments follow the OSP’s announcement on Sunday, June 1, directing Mr. Ofori-Atta to appear in person at its headquarters on Monday, June 2 or risked being reinstated on its wanted list and declared a fugitive from justice.

The OSP also stated its intention to initiate an INTERPOL Red Notice request, which could trigger international arrest and extradition processes.

Mr. Adjei insisted that the OSP must act with fairness and take into account the health condition of the former finance minister, especially when medical evidence has been officially communicated.

Meanwhile, Frank Davies, a member of the legal team for embattled former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta has dismissed suggestions that his client is deliberately avoiding the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), insisting that his failure to appear is due to a well-documented medical condition.

He questioned the widespread scepticism surrounding Mr Ofori-Atta’s health status, arguing that his condition was known long before the OSP initiated its investigations.

“If I tell you that I will come and see you tomorrow, and just on the brink of tonight, I suffer a casualty, would you see me tomorrow?” Mr Davies asked rhetorically. “Why should it be so difficult for people to understand that the person involved has a health challenge?” he questioned on Joy FM on Monday, June 2.
