Former Assistant Secretary to the Office of the Former President, Ibrahim Adjei, has called on the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to exercise discretion and show consideration for the medical condition of former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, as legal proceedings intensify.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Monday, June 2, Adjei defended Mr. Ofori-Atta’s absence from the OSP’s scheduled appearance, insisting it was due to genuine health concerns and not an attempt to evade justice.
“He has to understand that it is not the unwillingness to travel, but the medical implications of you travelling, that are preventing Honourable Ken Ofori-Atta from coming. At no point has Honourable Ken Ofori-Atta said he won’t come,” Adjei said. “He has addressed where he is and the medical treatment that he is currently receiving while the OSP is away. It is for the OSP to accommodate his particular medical condition.”
His remarks follow a warning issued by the OSP on Sunday, June 1, that Mr. Ofori-Atta would be declared a fugitive and placed on INTERPOL’s Red Notice list if he failed to present himself at the OSP headquarters on Monday, June 2.
Adjei stressed that the former Finance Minister’s medical situation had been communicated well in advance and should not be interpreted as a tactical delay.
“Nobody can accuse him of a last-minute excuse that he can’t attend. The medical situation predates his request,” he added. “It is really at the discretion of the OSP to say that given your circumstance, these are the issues that we want you to answer, and he can do it.”
Meanwhile, sources close to Mr. Ofori-Atta have confirmed that he is undergoing urgent medical treatment outside the country. His legal team has reportedly submitted official documentation to both the OSP and the Human Rights Court in support of his inability to travel.
