Former Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Ing. Kirk Koffi, has dismissed claims that the current wave of persistent, irregular, and unpredictable power outages—popularly known as “dumsor”—is the result of incompetence by President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
Speaking on Face to Face on Channel One TV on Tuesday, May 20, Ing. Koffi clarified that the present government has only recently assumed office, and resolving fuel supply issues takes time.
“No, no, no—this government just came in. So if there is a fuel supply challenge, it takes time to even get your arrangement for fuel. I know they are doing well. They have just bought some crude oil, I heard it in the media,” Ing. Koffi stated.
He explained that while crude oil purchases have been made to stabilise power generation, some Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are still operating on crude—a situation that brings high costs and maintenance challenges.
Ing. Koffi also noted that the VRA no longer relies on crude oil and stressed the financial difficulties of using expensive fuel sources, especially when the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) faces challenges in meeting its payment obligations.
He commended Energy Minister John Jinapor for taking swift action to address the crisis, saying: “I heard the minister; he is going to fix it, he is on the right track. Honourable Jinapor is on the right track to fix the problem.”
Reflecting on the Mahama administration’s efforts in the past, he added: “In 2014 to 2016, were they not the same people who fixed the problem?”
