Experts, policymakers, and visual storytellers have highlighted the severe water shortages affecting communities in the Northern Region as Ghana marked World Water Day 2025.
The World Water Day Photography Exhibition, organized by Foto4Change, in Tamale, used powerful imagery and immersive experiences to emphasize the urgent need for water preservation and climate resilience.
Geoffrey Buta, Team Lead at Foto4Change, underscored the role of visual storytelling in advocacy, saying: “Tamale has been facing water crises for almost a decade, and as a visual journalist, I see it as my duty to document these issues and hold those in power accountable.”
He urged organizations and policymakers to collaborate in tackling water challenges, emphasizing that compelling narratives can drive real change.

Md. Fauzia Aliu, Advocacy Campaigns and Inclusion Manager at WaterAid Ghana, reinforced the message, stating that access to clean water is a fundamental human right.
“Policymakers have the power to enact strong legislation, allocate resources, and implement sustainable solutions. But policies alone are not enough—commitment to implementation at the grassroots level is critical,” she stressed.
She also highlighted the power of storytelling in shaping policies, saying:
“A single image can highlight neglected communities, inspire action, and push for change.”

Sammy Adjei, Senior Project Officer at Catholic Relief Services (CRS), noted that community-led water governance has been successful in many areas, where governments provide resources, NGOs offer technical expertise, and local communities take ownership of their water projects.
“Through powerful storytelling, we can inspire advocacy, drive policy change, and promote sustainable water management solutions,” he added.
Yakubu Alhassan Kassim, WASH Officer at UNICEF’s Tamale field office, commended the initiative, stating: “Your work captures moments that inspire action, fostering awareness and advocacy for a world where every child has access to clean, safe water.”

The exhibition served as a call to action for policymakers, organizations, and the public to prioritize water security, climate resilience, and sustainable management to ensure a better future for all.
