Isaac Andrews Tandoh, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission in charge of Small Scale and Industrial Minerals, has shared that seven out of nine “red zone” forests where illegal mining, known as galamsey, was taking place have been reclaimed within just two months under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.
This follows the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) claim that the menace had escalated under the new NDC government.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Wednesday March 26, Tandoh stated “We have 44 out of our 288 forests under siege by these galamsey activities. Nine of them were no-go areas, and if you take the forestry codes, these forests were coded red, meaning no-go zones—nobody could enter those forests.
“But within two months, we’ve been able to reclaim seven, and the codes have changed from red to yellow under the administration of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama.”
The Deputy CEO emphasised the importance of reclaiming these forests to protect the environment and ensure sustainable development.
