Manhyia South Member of Parliament (MP), Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has raised concerns about the motives behind petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice.
President John Dramani Mahama is consulting the council of state to address three petitions submitted by various individuals seeking the removal of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo.
Speaking on the matter on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Wednesday March 26, the MP highlighted comments made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) while in opposition, suggesting that the judiciary was perceived as unfair to the party.
“We cannot analyse this matter devoid of comments that were made by the NDC while they were in opposition,” Baffour Awuah stated.
He referenced remarks by former President Mahama, who had indicated the need to review the judiciary’s composition, which the NDC believed was not fairly balanced.
The MP questioned whether the current petitions were influenced by these earlier sentiments, given that they are emerging while the NDC is in power.
“When this is happening at the time when the NDC is in power, one will be wondering whether it is being done in pursuit of some of the things that were said by the NDC while they were in opposition,” he added.
