Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, has announced significant progress in the government’s efforts to repeal Legislative Instrument 2464 (LI 2464), which permits mining in forest reserves.
Speaking on The Point of View on Wednesday, February 19, Murtala Muhammed reaffirmed President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to the repeal and provided an update on the ongoing processes.
“President Mahama promised that he was going to repeal LI 2464 (which allows mining in forest reserves). We have [begun processes] and we are far advanced. I, as the minister responsible for initiating the process to ensure that this particular LI is repealed is far advanced,” Muhammed stated.
He emphasised the government’s dedication to protecting Ghana’s forest reserves and highlighted the rapid progress being made.
“Far, far advanced, maybe within days the people of this country will hear something on it,” he added.
