The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has expressed satisfaction with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) significant electoral gains in the Ashanti Region during the 2024 general elections.

The party increased its parliamentary seats in the region to seven in the 2024 polls contributing to its overwhelming parliamentary majority nationwide.

The NDC currently holds 183 parliamentary seats, with four independent Members of Parliament caucusing with them. The NPP holds 88 seats.

Speaking during an interview on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV, Dr Amoakohene described the party’s performance in the Ashanti Region as exceptional, given the region’s traditional leanings toward the NPP.

“The 2024 general election was successful to a very large extent. We did exceed the expectations in the Ashanti region. Because in the Ashanti region, anything above 28% for us is even good for us.

“In 2008, we had 26.1%, we moved to a runoff and we still won. In 2012, we had 28% and we won in the first round. In 2016, we went back to 22%, we didn’t go anywhere. And in 2020, we came back to 26.6%. So, moving into 2024, we realised that we needed to move beyond the 28% in order to compensate for the other regional deficit.

“So we targeted actually 35% for the Ashanti region, and fortunately for us, we had 33.1%, minus Ahafo Ano, which is not yet added. If it’s added from our internal collation, it will give us 34%. We targeted 18 seats, we had 10 seats, three are still in court, 7 declared for us.”
