The Minister-Designate for Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, has emphasized the need for increased government participation in the administration of football in Ghana.

According to Adams, the current state of Ghanaian football requires a more hands-on approach from the government to complement the efforts of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Speaking on Point Blank on Eyewitness News on Monday, February 3, 2025, Adams highlighted the National Democratic Congress (NDC) commitment to improving the professional league and revitalising the nation’s love for sports.

He argued that leaving football administration solely to the FA has not yielded the desired results, and a collaborative effort is necessary to restore the passion and vibrancy of the sport.

“For us as NDC, we have made some commitments to improve the professional league and we are still committed to it. There is the need for government to have a hand in the handling of of our football. We cannot leave it for just the FA alone.

“It is not just as a result of this but we have had plans that in one way or the other the government must get involved to help bring back the life and the love that we we should have for our sports. I think that more then ever before, government’s participation in our sports is very necessary,” he stated.

He further stressed that the time has come for stakeholders to agree on a structured level of government involvement in football administration.

“I believe that we have gone round and we have reached a point where we must get to a certain level of participation of government in our football administration,”  he added.

Kofi Adams’ comments come amid growing concerns about the declining standards of Ghana’s domestic league and the recent tragic incident during a match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC.

The match, which took place on February 2, 2025, at Nsoatre in the Bono Region, resulted in the death of a Kotoko supporter following a clash.

The Minister-Designate took a moment to express his condolences to the bereaved family, describing the incident as unfortunate and avoidable.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to reviewing stadium security and emergency response protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.
