The Minister for the Interior has imposed a curfew on Nkwanta Township in the Oti Region, effective Tuesday, January 28, 2025.

The curfew, which runs from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., was instituted following advice from the Oti Regional Security Council and an Executive Instrument.

In a statement issued by the Interior Ministry, the government urged residents to exercise restraint and use established mechanisms to resolve conflicts and disputes.

The government further announced a ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, or offensive weapons within the township and surrounding areas.

The government warned that anyone found in possession of such weapons would face arrest and prosecution.

The renewed communal clashes, reportedly linked to a longstanding dispute, have claimed several lives and left others injured. The violence has also led to the destruction of 12 houses and a shop.

Despite the tense situation, security forces have assured residents of ongoing efforts to restore and maintain peace in the area.
