Three dead as Police foil attempt to steal gold from Newmont’s mining site

The Ghana Police Service has successfully restored order in Ntotroso in the Ahafo Region, after a group of individuals allegedly attempted to break into the Newmont mining site to steal gold on the night of Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

The incident escalated into a confrontation with personnel of the Ghana Police Service resulting in the death of three persons with four others sustaining injuries.

In a statement issued on Thursday, January 9, the police informed that calm has been restored in the town following an engagement between the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and community leaders and youth.

“The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, worked on the phone with the Regional Police team to engage community leaders and the youth…to stabilize the situation and there has been no reprisal attacks or escalation of the situation in the community,” the presser read.

An investigative team has been deployed to the community to investigate the incident.  Reinforcement has also been sent into the community to restore calm.

The police revealed that the three deceased are Muslims and due process of the law is being followed to release their bodies to their families for burial. The police further urged residents to remain calm.
