Two young men have been confirmed dead after a mining pit they were working in caved in at Osino in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region.

According to Channel One News sources, the victims were part of a group of about seven miners working in the pit around 2 a.m. on Wednesday when the tragic incident occurred. The pit unexpectedly collapsed, trapping some of the miners inside.

Upon hearing of the incident, residents rushed to the scene to assist with rescue efforts. Three individuals were successfully retrieved from the pit and rushed to the Saviour Memorial Hospital in Osiem.

Unfortunately, health professionals at the hospital confirmed the deaths of two of the miners. The third individual, who survived, is in critical condition and receiving treatment at the same hospital.

A search party, comprising members of the National Intelligence Bureau, other security agencies, and local excavator operators, worked tirelessly to locate additional victims. Despite extensive efforts, the search did not yield any positive results.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the Kyebi Government Hospital in the Abuakwa South Municipality for autopsy and preservation.

Meanwhile, some opinion leaders in the community have raised concerns about the persistent illegal mining activities in Osino, particularly along the main Accra-Kumasi Highway.

They highlighted the alarming practice of illegal miners operating both day and night, even in sensitive areas such as roads and under pylons belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana. Many residents blame the local police for failing to clamp down on these illegal activities.

This incident has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of mining regulations to prevent further tragedies.
