Frank Annoh-Dompreh of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been confirmed as the winner of the Nsawam Adoagyiri parliamentary seat after a recount of the election results.

Annoh-Dompreh secured 29,640 votes, narrowly defeating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Amenorpe Philbert Fummey, who garnered 29,433 votes.

Court’s Intervention

The recount was prompted by a High Court ruling on December 20, which ordered the Electoral Commission (EC) to re-collate and announce the results for both the Nsawam Adoagyiri and Ablekuma North constituencies, nullifying earlier declarations.

This decision followed a judicial review initiated by six dissatisfied NPP parliamentary candidates, who had requested a mandamus order to compel the EC to re-collate the results.

The petitioners, whose constituencies included Tema Central, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Okaikwei Central, Techiman South, Ablekuma North, and Ahafo Ano North, raised concerns over alleged irregularities during the initial collation process.

They further called for heightened security at the collation centres to ensure the EC could complete its duties without disruption.

Election Tensions and Disruptions

The electoral process in Nsawam Adoagyiri was marred by significant unrest on election day, with the collation centre being besieged, halting progress. Attempts by the EC to resume collation on December 13 failed, and similar disruptions were reported in other constituencies, including Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Tema Central.

These disturbances, along with the subsequent relocation of collation activities to the Police Training School, led to further disputes regarding the results aggregation and delegation process.

NDC’s Objection

The NDC has expressed strong opposition to the re-collation, arguing that the results declared at polling stations should be upheld. The party believes that the EC’s nullification of the initial results exacerbates the already tense situation surrounding the parliamentary elections in these contentious constituencies.
