Heavy security has been deployed at the Electoral Commission’s (EC) Regional Office at Ridge in Accra as the re-collation of results for nine disputed constituencies resumes.
The exercise is taking place in the absence of representatives from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The High Court, on December 20, directed the EC to re-collate and announce results for the Ablekuma North and Nsawam-Adoagyiri constituencies, nullifying earlier declarations.
The ruling was part of a judicial review initiated by six dissatisfied New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates.
Court’s Directive
The six NPP candidates, representing Tema Central, Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Okaikwei Central, Techiman South, Ablekuma North, and Ahafo Ano North, petitioned the court to issue a mandamus order compelling the EC to re-collate and declare results.

They cited irregularities in the collation process and sought the court’s intervention to restore confidence in the electoral process.
As part of the ruling, the High Court also directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure adequate security at the collation centres, enabling the EC to fulfill its constitutional mandate without interference.
NDC Legal Challenge
The NDC had attempted to join the case by filing a motion for joinder, seeking to participate in the judicial review. However, the court dismissed their motion, stating that the party lacked sufficient grounds for inclusion in the case.
Following this, the NDC filed an application on December 20 to stay the High Court’s ruling regarding the re-collation of results for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Okaikwei Central, and seven other disputed constituencies.
Tensions and Security Measures
The absence of NDC representatives at the ongoing re-collation has raised concerns among stakeholders. Meanwhile, the EC has assured the public that the re-collation process will be conducted transparently and in accordance with the law.
Security personnel, including police and military, have been stationed at the Ridge office to maintain order and prevent disruptions. The tight security measures reflect the sensitive nature of the process, given the high political stakes.
Implications
The results of the re-collation are expected to address disputes that have fueled tensions since the election results were initially announced. Political analysts suggest the final outcome could significantly impact parliamentary composition.
The EC is expected to announce the re-collated results once the process is completed.
