Some residents of Bawku in the Upper East Region have expressed distress over the increasing rate of attacks and killings in the area.
The area has recorded about 35 deaths since October this year with many other fatalities due to a chieftaincy dispute in the area.

Earlier on Wednesday, December 18, gunmen engaged in a fierce battle around the Zongo-Gingande enclave as well as the Kpalore-Gozesi area after two people were killed earlier on Monday. Residents say they are living in distress due to the situation.
The Bawku Conflict which resurged in October this year is causing intense fear among residents who have remained in the area.

So far, about 35 people including women and children have been killed in the area with many others sustaining different kinds of injuries.
On Monday, two people Sulemana Kasim and Moro Aziz were killed at separate locations by gunmen.
Currently, communities in the area have disintegrated with residents living under self-quarantine over fears of attacks.

Some residents who spoke to Channel One News indicated that the situation is disheartening.
“The conflict has disturbed a lot because people are unable to go to where they please. We can’t even go to the mosque to pray. Everyone prays indoors. If the government of the day can do something about it, it will help us. I saw a video today where the president-elect was talking about Bawku. I am sure he will help with the situation,” stated Salifu Abelim, a resident of Bawku.

Ashimin Saeed Bagaya is a businessman in the area, he tells Channel One News the conflict has deteriorated their businesses with many business centres and institutions being closed down as well as restricting movements of residents making lives unbearable.
“The situation is challenging to everyone. It has affected everybody in this community. People don’t go out, people don’t come in, quite worrying. Businesses are closed, no jobs. The previous government has been loose in handling the situation. We hope the new government will be proactive on the matter,” he said.
