Former Sports Minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has vehemently denied allegations that he purchased a coconut for $100 during the Ghana Black Stars’ participation in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
The accusations surfaced in the aftermath of the tournament, where the Black Stars’ poor performance and the controversial transport of $3 million in cash to pay player bonuses drew widespread criticism.
Among the claims, Ankrah was accused of spending an exorbitant amount on a single coconut.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu, on Tuesday, November 26, the former minister dismissed the allegations as “completely senseless.” He noted that the claims were part of a smear campaign following the team’s performance.
Afriyie Ankrah, who appeared before the Brazil 2014 Commission of Inquiry and became notable for breaking down in tears during the proceedings, reiterated his innocence, emphasizing that the accusations had no basis in fact.
“And also the focus was on unnecessary externalities, and sensationalism, yes things happened in Brazil, I was in charge and I took responsibility and apologised. But there was so much focus on non-essentials. Up till today, people think that I bought a coconut for $100, completely senseless. And all things that are not true and necessary.”
He said he has put the past and the humiliations he experienced behind him.
“I was the central victim, do you know what it means to be put on television, for four months, live coverage? Horrible stories, every day you are on the front page. Different stories, lies and I was told not to speak. You know what that means? But I have gone through it, I survived. And I have forgiven them and I have moved on.”
