The Government of Ghana has begun the immediate evacuation of its citizens from Iran in response to escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced.
In a Facebook statement on Monday, June 16, 2025, the Minister said the Mahama administration’s decision prioritizes the safety and security of Ghanaians living in the region.
“In the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, the Mahama Administration has decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” he stated.
As part of the move, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been shut down with immediate effect. The evacuation process, which is being carried out via land borders, covers all Ghanaian nationals including diplomats, students, professionals, and other residents.
Touching on the situation in Israel, Mr. Ablakwa noted that the government is closely monitoring developments and will issue further guidance soon.
Meanwhile, operations at the Ghanaian embassy in Tel Aviv have been scaled down to the minimum essential level.
“All Ghanaians in Israel are advised to maintain close communication with our consular department,” he urged.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to citizen safety, the Minister assured that every effort would be made to protect Ghanaians caught in the conflict zones.
“No effort will be spared in protecting Ghanaian lives and keeping all Ghanaians out of harm’s way,” he emphasised.
The government also renewed its appeal to both Iran and Israel to seek peaceful solutions to the conflict. “Ghana reiterates its demand on both parties to pursue diplomatic options and end hostilities,” Mr. Ablakwa concluded.
