The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has denied receiving any official medical documentation from the legal team of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, dismissing reports of a hospital-issued letter as a publicity move.
In a statement released on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, the OSP clarified that despite media circulation of a purported letter from the Mayo Clinic—detailing Mr. Ofori-Atta’s prostate cancer diagnosis and upcoming surgery—the office itself has not received any such communication.
“We wish to place on record that neither Mr. Ofori-Atta nor his lawyers have submitted any such letter to the OSP. The only correspondence received from his legal representatives is a letter notifying the OSP of a change in his medical condition, and on their say-so,” the statement said.
The office further emphasised that no certified medical record or official document from any hospital authority has been submitted to confirm that Mr. Ofori-Atta is unable to return to Ghana.
“It is notable that his alleged hospital letter had been circulated through the media rather than submitted to the law enforcement agency actively investigating him. To date, no certified medical record or official document from any hospital authority has been submitted to the OSP indicating that Mr. Ofori-Atta is incapacitated or unable to travel to Ghana,” the statement added.
The OSP’s response follows public attention on a medical letter reportedly issued by the Mayo Clinic, which states that Mr. Ofori-Atta has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and is scheduled for surgery in June 2025. The letter has been widely circulated in the media, particularly through Asaase Radio.
Reacting to the development, Sammy Darko, Director of Strategy, Research, and Communication at the OSP, described the media release of the document as disingenuous.
“If you have this and you won’t show this to the SP or the office, but you can share it with Asaase Radio—fake afterthought,” he told Citi News.
The former finance minister was expected to appear before the OSP for questioning but failed to do so, prompting the office to issue a wanted notice and request an INTERPOL Red Notice on Monday June 2. The OSP alleges that Mr. Ofori-Atta has consistently declined to honour multiple invitations related to an ongoing corruption investigation.
