Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has won the Canadian federal election, marking a dramatic political comeback just months after languishing in the polls. The result follows a whirlwind campaign dominated by strained U.S.-Canada relations and the recent leadership shakeup that saw Carney replace Justin Trudeau as party leader.

In a defiant victory speech, Carney directly addressed the growing tensions with Washington, telling supporters: “President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us — that will never ever happen.”

It remains uncertain whether the Liberals will secure a parliamentary majority or will need to work with other parties to form a government, as vote counting continues in key ridings.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who led a campaign focused on economic issues and national sovereignty, conceded defeat, stating that “hard lessons” had been learned.

The projected win caps a remarkable turnaround for the Liberals. Just three months ago, the party trailed significantly in national polls. But Carney’s rise and the escalating rhetoric from President Trump became the central narrative of the election, galvanising Liberal support and reshaping the political landscape.
