The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has lashed out at the petitioners whose complaints led to the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The petitions, filed by private citizen Daniel Ofori, senior police officer Ayamga Akolgo, and the civic group, Shining Stars of Ghana, formed the basis for President John Dramani Mahama’s decision on Tuesday, April 22, to suspend the Chief Justice.

The move followed the establishment of a prima facie case under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and was taken in consultation with the Council of State.

A five-member committee has since been set up to probe the matter.

In protest, a coalition of political parties, including the NPP, has announced a nationwide demonstration scheduled for Monday, May 5.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News with Selorm Adonoo on Friday, April 24, Nana B dismissed the petitions as lacking merit.

“The said petitions for me are baseless, hollow. In one of the petitions, the person said he was not entitled to provide any evidence, that is, the Shining Stars of Ghana. This Shining Stars of Ghana matter was the same case, same facts, in which Prof. Kwaku Asare petitioned former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to remove the Chief Justice, the same facts,” he stated.

He further questioned the credibility of the petitions and their legal standing to warrant the suspension.

“Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin and Speaker of Parliament are the same thing. How can you try somebody twice, in law, what we all call double jeopardy? None of the three petitions can guarantee a prima facie case,” Nana B asserted.
