The government’s ambitious “One Million Coders” initiative has seen an overwhelming response just hours after its launch, with over 91,000 Ghanaians applying within a single day.
Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, revealed the numbers at the official launch, on Wednesday, April 16, praising President John Mahama for his bold vision to reshape Ghana’s digital future.
“Mr. President, we planned to do the pilot with 260 students. But within the first four hours of announcing, we had over 4,000 applications. We decided a double-track and did 520. As of this morning — about 30 minutes ago — the number of applications we have received is 91,847,” the Minister disclosed.
He described the surge in interest as a clear endorsement of President Mahama’s vision to transform Ghana’s digital ecosystem and create opportunities for the youth.
All courses under the initiative will include foundational coding as part of the core curriculum, with elective coding modules available as well. These courses will be run concurrently across all regions to ensure broad participation and inclusivity.
“This speaks to the visionary nature of your plan and vision,” Sam George added, highlighting the scale and urgency with which the government is approaching digital skills development.
The “One Million Coders” programme aims to train a million Ghanaians in coding and digital skills over time, positioning the country as a digital powerhouse on the continent.
