Ningo-Prampram MP, Samuel Nartey George, has called for the complete repeal of Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, describing it as ineffective in the fight against illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, April 14, 2025, the outspoken legislator, who is also the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, said the regulation must be scrapped entirely to allow for a stronger and more unified national approach to tackling illegal mining.

“My personal view is that the LI 2462 should go,” he said, adding “I hold a personal view that the whole LI should be repealed. It should be repealed in its entirety.”

Sam George argued that galamsey remains one of the gravest threats to the country’s future and must be treated as such, regardless of political affiliations or who is in power.

“I still hold a personal view that galamsey is a crime against humanity. And irrespective of which party is in government — whether it is the NDC or NPP — and irrespective of who it is that engages in galamsey, it is illegal and must be dealt with holistically,” he stressed.

LI 2462, passed in 2022, outlines regulations for the establishment and operation of community mining schemes — a move that critics say has legitimized and masked illegal mining activities under political cover.

Sam George’s remarks add to growing calls for a bipartisan, uncompromising stance against the galamsey menace.
