Legal practitioner and a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Nii Kpakpo Addo has urged Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to introduce bipartisan legislation aimed at reforming search procedures.

This call comes in the wake of recent National Security operations that have raised concerns about potential rights violations.

National Security operatives recently conducted searches at the residences of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin condemned these searches, alleging that personal items, including jewelry and money belonging to the wife of Addison’s wife, were stolen during the operation.

In an interview on Channel One TV’s “The Big Issue, legal practitioner Nii Kpakpo Addo agreed with calls from some New Patriotic Party (NPP) members for enhanced regulations on search procedures.

He advised the Minority Leader and other Members of Parliament to introduce a bipartisan bill in Parliament to govern how searches are conducted, to benefit the broader Ghanaian populace.

He firmly believes that, if enacted, the bill would change the narrative of politicians targeting their opponents upon assuming office.

“What I hear from my friends in NPP is calls for reforms and I agree. You only become politically wiser when you leave power. And the same thing you did to your opponents is applied to you, then you begin to feel that oh, so what I was doing when I was in power, this is the same way it feels. So now that we have the full circle, and we agree that this thing about searches, maybe there’s a better way of doing it. Let us agree, and then introduce legislation in Parliament.

“Nothing stops the Minority Leader and other Members of Parliament from introducing a bi-partisan Bill in Parliament governing how searches should be conducted. At the end of the day, we all become beneficiaries.”
