Severe flooding hit Bimbilla on Sunday evening following heavy rains, leaving many homes submerged and residents stranded.

The flooding has been attributed to clogged gutters caused by indiscriminate refuse dumping by residents, preventing proper drainage.

Assembly members from the affected electoral areas spoke to Channel One News about the situation.

“The gutter is choked, so when it rains, the water cannot flow from the other side to the gutter. When it rained last week, the same thing happened. I consulted the chairman together with my honourable colleague from the other electoral area. He contacted Zoomlion to bring essentials for cleaning, but we were still figuring out how to mobilize people for the cleanup,” said Munkaila Muftaw, Assembly Member for Baatingli Electoral Area.

“Tomorrow, we will organize communal labour to clear the rubbish so the water can flow freely,” added Abdulai Abdul Wahid, Assembly Member for Bakpasugani.

Some affected residents expressed their frustration and appealed for urgent assistance.

“We were in the market when the rain started. Our house is flooded, and all our belongings have been submerged. Today, we have no place to sleep, and even when we break our fast, we don’t know what to do or eat. We are appealing for support,” lamented Damba Balkisu, a resident.

“Truly, it is because residents have been dumping refuse irresponsibly. When we complain, they tell us it’s not in our rooms that the refuse is dumped. Today, we are bearing the brunt because our properties are gone. We appeal for support,” said Abdulai Salima, another affected resident.

Authorities and residents are now calling for immediate action to address the drainage issue and prevent future occurrences.
