Fire has destroyed a portion of the girls’ dormitory block at the Labone Senior High School.
The incident happened after 12 pm, when the students were at afternoon prep on Sunday, March 16, 2025. The fire affected three dormitories, two partially burnt and one completely burnt.
The cause of the fire is yet to be known. Officers from the Ghana National Fire Service arrived 7 mins after the first call and contained the flames around 1.40 pm. There were no casualties and students have been moved to the assembly hall.
In an interview with Channel One News, Public Relations Officer with the Ghana National Fire Service, Alex King Nartey, revealed that although the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, initial suspicions point to a possible electrical fault.
“Out of six dormitories from this floor, three were burnt. One room was totally burnt but the other two were partially burnt, meaning that the extent of damage was manageable.
“We are still investigating, but we are suspecting an electrical fault but we are subjecting it to investigation to be able to ensure that whatever we expect it to be is truly what it is,” he said.
He urged management of senior high schools to provide ironing rooms and ensure regular inspection of electrical installation to avert possible future occurrences
Meanwhile, girls whose belongings were not affected have moved them to the compound of the girls’ dormitory block.
