The Coalition of NPP Youth Groups in the Nanton Constituency has locked up the party’s office in protest against the recent suspension of some constituency executives and members.
The group has petitioned the regional and national leadership of the party, demanding an immediate reversal of the suspensions.
“As loyal members of the NPP, we believe this decision is not only unfair but also detrimental to the unity and progress of the party. We therefore appeal to your high office to take immediate steps to revoke the suspension,” the petition stated.
Addressing the press, Ibrahim Abdul Fatawu, convener of the Coalition of NPP Youth Groups, stressed the need for rebuilding rather than division within the party.
“The NPP lost both the presidential and parliamentary elections in the Nanton Constituency. The focus of the party should be on rebuilding, uniting its members, and strategizing to recapture power in 2028,” he emphasized.
He argued that suspending dedicated members weakens the party’s strength and morale in the constituency.
“The constituency chairman and his committee did not grant the suspended members a fair hearing before taking this decision. As a democratic party that upholds the rule of law, it is unacceptable to suspend members without giving them an opportunity to defend themselves. Due process must always be followed to ensure transparency and fairness,” he added.
Fatawu warned that if the suspensions remain, they could discourage party members from committing their time, energy, and resources to the NPP.
“If this divisive action is not reversed, and a more responsible approach is not taken to bring the party together, the future of the NPP in the Nanton Constituency will be bleak,” he cautioned.
The NPP in the Nanton Constituency recently suspended 34 members for alleged misconduct during the 2024 general elections.
The suspended members include polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, and constituency executives.
A letter signed by the NPP Nanton Constituency Chairman, Abukari Inusah, indicated that the decision was unanimously adopted during a meeting of the Council of Elders, Council of Patrons, and Constituency Executives on January 23, 2025.
According to Mr. Inusah, several complaints were submitted to the party’s leadership, accusing the suspended members of violating the party’s constitution.
