President John Dramani Mahama has thrown his weight behind calls for a 30-day ceasefire in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, describing it as a crucial step toward peace.
Speaking at a credentials ceremony where five newly accredited ambassadors to Ghana presented their letters at the Presidency, President Mahama underscored the need for dialogue to bring an end to the devastating conflict.
In a discussion with the Ambassador of Italy, H.E. Laura Ranalli, Mahama welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that it could serve as a gateway to negotiations aimed at resolving the crisis.
“We’re pleased to note President Zelensky’s call for a 30-day ceasefire. We hope this will pave the way for dialogue to begin, and that the issue between Russia and Ukraine can be addressed during that period,” he stated.
He further highlighted the tragic human cost of the war, particularly among young people, and stressed the urgency of ending the hostilities.
“A lot of young people have lost their lives, and it’s time for this war to end. The only way for it to end is through a ceasefire and the start of dialogue. That’s our position on the matter,” he added.
The Russia-Ukraine war, which has raged on for over two years, has had far-reaching consequences, not just for the countries involved but also for global economies, food security, and energy supplies.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine had accepted a 30-day ceasefire proposed by the United States, following talks between US and Ukranian officials in Saudi Arabia.
Trump praised the deal. adding “hopefully President Putin will agree to that also and we can get this show on the road.”
President Mahama’s stance aligns with growing international appeals for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
