Stephen Amoah, former Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, has defended the economic record of the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
He insists that contrary to claims by the current government, the NPP left behind a robust and growing economy for the John Dramani Mahama-led administration to build upon.
Speaking ahead of the 2025 budget presentation, Stephen Amoah refuted allegations that the previous government mismanaged the economy, arguing that the policies and financial strategies implemented by the NPP administration positioned Ghana for continued economic growth.
According to the Nhyiaeso lawmaker, the strong economic management by the NPP resulted in a notable 5.7 percent GDP growth for the year 2024, a significant achievement that demonstrates the health of the economy at the time of the power transition.
He further argued that the economic progress made under the NPP administration cannot be ignored. He maintained that Ghana’s financial indicators were beginning to show significant improvement before the transition of power, and as such, the current administration should acknowledge and appreciate the work done by the previous government rather than discredit it.
“I believe Cassiel Ato Forson is going to present a budget of continuity because what we left for them at the end of 2024 is positive and he will come and present them. The Ghana Statistical Service figures say that our GDP for 2024 grew by 5.7 percent which is far higher than 2016.
“Our economic figures have started doing well and so we expect them to accept the fact that we did not leave them a comatose economy for them to manage as President John Dramani is claiming. They should be truthful to Ghanaians and laud the NPP government and continue our good works that we did.”
