Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, the Acting Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), has undertaken a comprehensive inspection of key water treatment plants in Accra to assess operational challenges and implement immediate measures to enhance production.

The initiative comes as part of management’s efforts to address critical issues affecting water supply, ensuring swift interventions to balance demand and improve service efficiency.

As part of the tour, Mr. Mutawakilu visited the Weija Water Treatment Plant, the Kpong Water Treatment Plant, and the Accra Desalination Plant to gain firsthand insight into the obstacles limiting optimal water production.

Mr. Mutawakilu engaged with plant engineers and operators to evaluate infrastructure conditions, identify technical challenges, and determine areas requiring urgent intervention.

Accra currently faces a critical water supply deficit, with daily demand reaching 220 million gallons, while production stands at just 130 million gallons—leaving a shortfall of 90 million gallons.

Recognizing this gap, the MD reaffirmed GWL’s commitment to enhancing operational efficiency, maximizing production capacity, and leveraging modern technology to improve water supply.

He emphasized the urgency of addressing maintenance issues, upgrading aging infrastructure, and resolving operational setbacks that hinder optimal production. He also highlighted the immediate need for system enhancements to boost water availability for residents across the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.

Accompanied by his team of Chief Managers and the Acting Deputy Managing Director in charge of operations, Mr. Mutawakilu assured stakeholders that GWL is prioritizing both short-term and long-term solutions to ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply.

Beyond the treatment plants, the MD also visited critical installations, including the Mile 18 Central Workshop—where major repairs and fabrication of pipes, pumps, and drainage systems are carried out—and the Central Store, which houses essential chemicals and materials for water treatment operations.

Commitment to Enhancing Water Supply

Mr. Mutawakilu, following the inspection, reaffirmed the government of John Dramani Mahamah’s vision for the Water Sector and GWL’s commitment to addressing production shortfalls by improving operational efficiency at the treatment plants and the central workshop.

The company, he stated, intends to implement targeted interventions to bridge the water supply gap and ensure that residents of Accra have access to a more consistent and reliable water supply.
