The Chief Imam of the Bole Traditional Area, Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu, has officially placed a ban on extravagant Islamic weddings in his jurisdiction.
The directive takes effect from Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
In a statement issued after several consultations with the Islamic clergy, the Chief Imam cited concerns over increasing financial burdens that prevent many young Muslims from getting married.
Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu emphasized that the decision aligns with Islamic teachings and aims to curb excessive spending on wedding ceremonies, which has discouraged many young people from fulfilling the important religious duty of marriage.
According to the statement, several modern wedding practices have been identified as contributing to the high costs associated with Islamic marriages in Bole.
These include elaborate wedding receptions with multiple outfit changes by the couple, the engagement of male beauticians for female brides, and entertainment activities such as recorded dance sessions, popularly referred to as ‘jams.’
The Chief Imam urged members of the Muslim community to cooperate in enforcing the new directive.
He also called on local authorities, including the Bolewura (Paramount Chief of the Bole Traditional Area), the Bole Municipal Police Command, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and community leaders, to support the implementation of the ban.
