The Minority in Parliament has criticized the Majority caucus for failing to attend parliamentary proceedings in significant numbers, leading to a lack of quorum and the suspension of business in the House.
The situation arose after the Minority raised concerns that the required minimum of 91 Members of Parliament (MPs) needed to conduct official business was not met.
As a result, the First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, was forced to suspend the sitting, halting the legislative process for the day.
Addressing journalists after the suspension, the Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Professor Kingsley Nyarko, expressed concern over the persistent issue of absenteeism, emphasizing that such occurrences undermine parliamentary efficiency and delay critical decision-making.
“We need one third of the House to commence business. We come to the House to work. The NDC claims to be the super majority but they struggle to assemble their members to come to the House to do business.
“Today what we’ve seen is just embarrassing. we are here to do business but they couldn’t marshal their numbers to do business. And for us this is worrying. How long can we continue on this tangent? We Ghanaians to know and to tell our friends from the NDC to take Ghanaians serious, to take business of the House serious. Because Ghanaians expect a lot from us. They want us to meet their needs and aspirations. When this behavior continues unchecked, it is not going to help us advance this country.”
