Residents of Appiadu, Kokoben, and surrounding areas in the Oforikrom Municipality in the Ashanti Region have raised serious concerns over the abandoned Agenda 111 hospital project in their community.

Despite its commissioning by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, the facility remains incomplete, leaving their healthcare needs unmet.

One of the facilities, intended to serve thousands in the Oforikrom Municipality—particularly in peri-urban communities like Appiadu and Kokoben—was commissioned on December 5, 2024, with high hopes of improving healthcare delivery.

However, it remains non-operational, forcing residents to travel long distances for medical attention.

“The only hospital closest to us is Emena. With that, it becomes very difficult commuting to the hospital, especially when the patient does not own a car,” Beatrice Atisogbe, a resident of Kokoben stated.

“The nearest hospitals are in Emena and Donyina, and having this facility operational would be a great relief for us. Currently, it is extremely difficult to find transportation after 9 PM, especially in emergencies involving pregnant women,” stated Richmond Boamah, another resident of Kokoben.

“With the hospitals still non-operational, our only options are Emena or Donyina. Emena, particularly is far from here,” lamented Kwadwo Asamoah, a resident of Kokoben

Further compounding the issue, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, during his visit on March 3, 2025, revealed that an outstanding debt of over GHC 800 million must be cleared before the hospital can become operational, leaving its future uncertain.

Additionally, the minister disclosed that no action plan has been put in place for staffing these hospitals once completed, posing another major hurdle to their operationalisation.
