President John Dramani Mahama has announced government’s plans to explore public-private partnership to address accommodation crisis in tertiary institutions.
Delivering the State of the Nation’s Address (SONA) on Thursday, February 27, President Mahama noted that rising enrollment has strained the infrastructure of universities causing overcrowding and inadequate accommodation.
He indicated that government is determined to expand access and align tertiary education with national goals particularly in STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics].
In this regard, the President revealed that government will this year conduct a feasibility study on the new public universities and campuses of the existing public universities in the six new regions [Savannah, North East, Western North, Oti, Bono East, Ahafo- Regions]. In addition, government will this year engage with universities and private investors to construct more hostel facilities in public universities and other tertiary institutions.
This he believes will ease congestion and address the student accommodation deficit the country faces yearly .
“Government will this year engage with the existing public universities to identify suitable sites on their campuses, acquired lands for the implementation of the private sector participation in the provision of hostels project. This is a partnership between government, the universities and private investors to expand hostel capacity on their campuses. This will allow more students to be accommodated on the campuses to allow for a better learning environment,” he stated.
