Some government workers, whose appointments have been revoked, are appealing to President John Dramani Mahama for reconsideration and possible reinstatement.
On February 11, 2025, the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah issued a directive revoking all appointments and recruitments made into public service establishments after December 7, 2024.
In the directive, Mr Debrah requested all heads of government institutions to take the necessary steps to annul these appointments and recruitments into public services.
Following the directive, several government institutions such as the Ghana Education Service, the Ghana Grid Company, and the Ghana Revenue Authority, among others complied with the instruction and revoked the appointment of some of the employees.
Some of the affected employees believe they should not bear the consequences of the government’s actions. They are urging the president to reverse the decision.
According to them, the abrupt termination of their roles has had a severe impact on their livelihoods, leaving many in financial and emotional distress.
“We need to be reinstated because this is very sad and it is affecting our mental health. It is not easy. The day I got the revocation, I couldn’t stay at home. I have kids, I was with my husband. I still had to look for a guest house because I told him that, I don’t know how I will face my children,” an affected woman lamented.
“They should take the poliics out of that. We are Ghanaians,” another bemoaned.
“I appeal to the president to come to our aide, his sons and daughters because we are genuinely employed,” another affected person said.
Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo and lawyer of some of the affected employees argues that the government may not have followed the proper procedure before terminating the appointment. He insists that those recruited through the correct channels deserve justice.
“If you listen to these stories then it begs the question, did the government really go through the right procedure in understanding how these things are done before issuing the statement? I don’t think that was done,” he said.
