The Minister for Energy and Green Transitions, John Jinapor, has dismissed reports suggesting that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is up for sale.

Speaking during a working visit to the West African Gas Pipeline Company Station in Tema on February 21, 2025, Jinapor clarified that while the government is exploring private sector participation, ECG is not being sold.

He explained that the move aims to enhance the efficiency of the power distributor’s operations, not transfer ownership.

“The news items, the publications and the commentary by some people who should know better that we’re selling ECG is not true.

“It will not be sold, but we want some private participation to bring some high level of efficiencies, reduce the losses, increase the revenue base so that we can pay for some of these bills we’re talking about.”
