A Nigerian national and two Ghanaians have been sentenced to a total of 50 years in prison by the Assin-Kyerewere Circuit Court for a botched robbery attempt at Wawase-Semanhyia in the Assin North District.
The culprits, Francis Baidoo, a 30-year-old driver, Wisdom Aleki, a 24-year-old tricycle rider, and Mohammed Baba, a 38-year-old Nigerian beautician, were found guilty despite entering not guilty pleas.
Baidoo and Aleki each received 15-year sentences for conspiring to commit a crime and attempted theft. Baba was sentenced to 20 years for conspiring to commit a crime, causing harm, and attempted robbery.
According to Prosecutor Chief Inspector Gilbert Abagna Anyongo, the culprits plotted to steal from cocoa-purchasing clerk Emmanuel Obese on December 19, 2024. They rented a Toyota Vitz urban vehicle from Accra Mall to transport them to Wawase-Semanhyia, where they would carry out their plan.
The culprits arrived at Wawase-Semanhyia around 1 a.m., armed with a handgun and other dangerous weapons. However, their plan was thwarted when a witness spotted them and sounded the alarm.
A search ensued, leading to the capture of Baidoo, Aleki, and Baba. However, the fourth suspect, Francis Larbi, escaped and is currently at large.
During the search, Baba and Baidoo assaulted commuters, inflicting stab wounds and robbing them, but were eventually subdued and arrested.
