The Upper East Regional branch of the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) has stated that the ongoing conflict in Bawku has affected the revenue mobilisation of its agencies in that region.

The commission indicated that the Ghana Water Company Ltd (GWL) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) in the Bawku area have not been operating effectively due to the volatility of that enclave which has also affected their revenue generation.

The Bawku Conflict which erupted in November 2021 with re-emergence in October 2024 has so far claimed numerous lives and property with gunmen continuously engaging in attacks and battles making the area volatile.

Speaking to Channel One News in Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional Manager of the PURC, Seth Kponyo stated that, the conflict in Bawku has greatly affected their activities.

“Both Ghana Water Limited and NEDCO are providing services to people in and around Bawku but due to the insecurities in the area, our people are not able to go around for the revenue mobilisation. And for most consumers, until the service providers go to them or threaten with disconnection, they do not pay.

“It is only about a few people who willingly pay. Because of that, they are not able to do revenue moblisation and that is affecting our operations hugely,”  he stated.
