The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured Ghanaians that the government’s swift intervention in combating the recent outbreaks of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) and Cholera is yielding positive results.

His assurance comes amid a rising number of CSM cases, particularly in the Upper West Region, where the disease has already claimed 14 lives.

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, the Health Minister provided an update on measures taken to curb the spread of CSM, Cholera, and Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

He highlighted significant progress made in controlling the outbreaks and reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health.

“We have made considerable efforts to keep the outbreak under control, our efforts are paying off. Already a wave of improvement is evident in the Upper West Region where new meningitis cases are decreasing.

“This positive change follows the Ministry of Health’s swift and decisive action which included deploying experts to support local teams in conducting high-level surveillance to assess the situation and provide support and also ensure treatment for all affected individuals,” he stated.

He further noted that the government has activated an emergency operation center to coordinate response efforts and has consulted international experts for additional guidance.

“We have also activated the emergency operation center for coordinated response efforts and engaged in consultations with international experts. The mobilisation of essential antibiotics and targeted public awareness campaign have further boosted our effort in controlling the outbreak,” he stated.

The minister assured that his office will continue to monitor the situation closely and take all necessary measures to contain the outbreak. He emphasised that all major hospitals have been placed on high alert to manage and treat cases effectively.
