The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, has raised a serious alarm calling on the government to expedite processes in sending relief support to residents in the coastal part of the Volta Region affected by the tidal wave.
In a post on X, Ahiagbah indicated that he had paid a visit to the communities of Agavedzi and Amutinu. He noted that the rise in sea level had covered both communities forcing residents out of their homes.
According to him, residents whose homes have been affected sleep on the premises of the newly built automated premix fuel station across the road.
Ahiagbah indicated that the residents informed him that the Member of Parliament for the area, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, was in the community on February 3rd, to assess the situation. Reports indicate that she was yet to get back on the government’s intervention.
“The residents told me the Member of Parliament, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, was in the community on February 3rd, but I have not heard anything since then. She might be trying to help, but I think the government must lead, given the extent of need.
“Needless to say, this is Ketu South, the supposed ‘World Bank’ and the home of the General Secretary of the NDC [National Democratic Congress], Hon. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey,” he wrote.
He bemoaned that victims have restrained themselves from speaking on the issue publicly since the NDC is in power and that engaging in public discussions about the situation will make the party unpopular.
“I see a crisis far more significant here than we have seen recently. However, the people are unwilling to cry publicly for help because they fear it will make their party, the NDC, unpopular. In fact, the NDC sympathetic Assemblyman, Mr. Ebenezer Assah, who in the past, under President Akufo-Addo, had been inciting the good people of the Volta Region against the NPP, has gone quiet and even refused to join me in touring the site.”
Ahiagbah called on the government to expedite processes in coming to the aid of the affected victims, positing that the situation is beyond politics as the people are in dire need of help.
“For me, this is beyond politics. The people need help, and the government must intervene now,” he added.
