Hundreds of passengers and vehicles crossing the Black Volta at Dambai have been left stranded following the breakdown of the ferry, which serves as the primary means of transport across the river.
Confirming the situation to Channel One News, Dambai Central Assemblyman Charles Awuranyi emphasized the severe traffic congestion caused by the malfunction.
He noted that the situation has worsened, with trucks loaded with perishable goods stuck on the other side of the river, leading to significant losses for traders.
“Rather unfortunate, because the ferry got broken, we are all on the other side, and those from Krachi and other places are also on the other side. Some of them are sending goods to Accra, but due to the heat from the sun, some of their yams are spoilt,” he lamented.
Awuranyi revealed that the ferry broke down on the morning of Sunday, February 16, 2025, exacerbating issues for market activities.
“The ferry got spoilt around 9 o’clock in the morning. Unfortunately, today is also a market day, and some vehicles coming from the other side to Dambai are stranded. The whole market is worried, and those traveling from Accra to Dambai to cross to Krachi, Wulensi, and other towns are also stuck.”
He urged the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the government to take immediate action.
“We are pleading with the VRA to take note and ensure that anytime there is a problem, they try as much as possible to solve it quickly.
“We have two ferries here, but one got spoilt about three or four months ago, so we have been relying on only one. The workers are doing their best, but since it broke down, things are not in order,” he added.
