The largest opposition New Patriotic Party(NPP) has questioned the propriety of the seeming haste by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in declaring the former Finance Minister a fugitive from justice without due process.
Addressing a Press conference in Accra on Thursday, February 13, the NPP’s National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, wondered why the OSP didn’t take time to travel to the United Kingdom to investigate the embattled former finance Minister as he did same in the infamous Airbus scandal.
“You recall that there was another matter the OSP was investigating – the famous Airbus scandal involving intermediaries. Mr. Kissi Agyebeng told us in August last year that he travelled all the way to the UK to interview Sam Mahama – John Mahama’s brother, who was intermediary five. So what stops him from doing the same in this case?” he questioned.
Nana Boakye, popularly known as ‘Nana B,’ condemned the OSP’s approach as unnecessary and inappropriate, arguing that the matter could have been resolved through proper communication.
He admonished the Special Prosecutor to avoid making sensational statements.
“Mr. Ofori-Atta can never be a fugitive. He is not a fugitive, and he will never be a fugitive. The OSP got it wrong. He got it wrong. Once Ofori-Atta’s doctors declare him fit and healthy, he will return to the country.”
“Until then, the Special Prosecutor should avoid making sensational statements provoking public emotions and creating drama over a matter that could have been adequately resolved through correspondence,” he stated.
Former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been declared a fugitive by the OSP in connection with his alleged involvement in some corruption cases in the Akufo-Addo regime.
Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyabeng disclosed on Wednesday that Ofori-Atta has left Ghana to evade investigations, hence all necessary steps would be taken to bring him back.
