The Upper West Regional Minister, Charles Lwanga Puozuing, has assured residents of an inclusive and development-oriented leadership as he assumes office.
A delegation of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters, including party executives and elders, welcomed the newly appointed Upper West Regional Minister on Sunday, February 9, 2025.
Speaking to a large crowd that gathered to welcome him, the minister emphasised the need for a collective effort to make the region attractive and progressive.
Highlighting his commitment to an open-door policy that allows all stakeholders to contribute to the region’s appointment, he stated “What I wish to say is that we need to support and assist each other to ensure that the Upper West Region becomes attractive for all of us.”
In a firm caution against divisiveness, Puozuing discouraged rumour-mongering, stating that discussions with him should focus on personal, community, or regional development rather than criticism of others.
“Once you come to me and say something about somebody, whilst you are there, I will call the person,” he warned, urging unity and sincerity in engagements.
Recognising the enthusiasm surrounding his appointment, the minister called for order, stressing the importance of allowing security protocols to function effectively.
He assured residents that there would be opportunities for community interactions, including social gatherings, at appropriate times.
Priority Areas for Development
Outlining his vision for the region, Puozuing identified four key focus areas: healthcare, education, water systems, and youth empowerment through job creation and agriculture.
He expressed optimism that targeted investments in these sectors would drive significant transformation while remarking “I believe that by the time the four-year term is up, Upper West would have moved from its current state to a newer level.”
Acknowledging demographic realities, the minister pledged to prioritise women’s empowerment and girl-child education, noting that the Upper West Region’s population stands at approximately 905,000, with women constituting 51.8%.
He emphasized the need to implement the Affirmative Action Bill by ensuring female representation in administrative roles, despite cultural challenges.
Strategic Planning and Resource Mobilisation
Puozuing announced plans to assess the region’s existing 10-year development framework, indicating that necessary reviews would be conducted to align it with current needs.
He assured residents that funding for projects would be secured through well-structured proposals to donor agencies willing to support areas such as agriculture, health, education, and water systems.
“Resources will come when you have good proposals when you have good plans,” he stated, reinforcing his commitment to results-driven governance.
Commitment to Transparency and Media Engagement
He underscored his willingness to engage with journalists and ensure accountability in a bid to foster transparency while promising regular media engagements, at least quarterly or biannually, to update the public on progress made.
“I know you know I’m not media shy,” he insisted.
