The Member of Parliament for Pusiga, Laadi Ayii Ayamba believes stricter security measures and limited guest access during parliamentary vetting sessions is a step to preventing disruptions.
Speaking before Parliament’s Special Committee investigating the January 30 Appointments Committee chaos.
She suggested restricting entry to only committee members and nominees.
The MPs stressed that reducing the number of attendees would enhance security, maintain order, and ensure smooth proceedings.
“We can improve the security of the committee by reducing the number of people who will come in. If the committee members are eleven and the subject members are two on each side, they should be the only ones who should be allowed on. So that when there is an incident, nobody is taken as an outsider who is here to cause a problem.”
Ayamba also urged MPs to support security personnel in maintaining discipline, cautioning that even the best security measures would be ineffective without cooperation from parliamentarians.
“It is very important we improve on security. Suffice it to say, we need to be conscious of ourselves. Just as I mentioned, even if you bring the most conscious police officers here and we do not support them to keep up security, it wouldn’t work. because at the end of the day, they may not accord us the respect they have for us,” she said.
