The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it is ready to complete the collation of parliamentary results for the Ablekuma North, however, it is waiting on the Ghana Police Service to provide their personnel with security.
This, according to the commission is to prevent the interruption from the political parties during the collation.
This follows a one-week ultimatum issued by the Minority in Parliament. The Chief Whip of the Minority Caucus, Frank Annoh-Dompreh demanded that the EC declare the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate, Akua Afriyie, as the duly elected Member of Parliament for the constituency.
Fred Tetteh, Deputy Director of Research at the EC, confirmed that the Commission has made arrangements to finalize the process and is awaiting security clearance from the police to proceed.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, Mr. Tetteh stated, “Because it is our constitutional mandate to have this thing completed, we have written to the police to provide security for us to be able to continue. Because we don’t want what happened in January to reoccur. So, this is what we have planned and we are just waiting for the police to give us the security then we can go ahead with the outstanding polling stations. The three pollings have their results ready, our is for us to just come and announce the winner.”
The collation process for Ablekuma North, the only remaining constituency, commenced on January 8, 2025, but was suspended due to incomplete results from three polling stations. The Electoral Commission (EC) had planned to resume the collation on January 17, 2025, at 8:00 a.m.
However, acting on intelligence reports, the Ghana Police Service recommended postponing the exercise. Despite this advice, the EC, in a statement issued on Friday, January 17, revealed that the police had not provided adequate security at the collation centers. This lapse led to the centers being invaded by party supporters, further disrupting the process.
