Health officials in the Ashanti Region have raised concerns over the rising incidence of cancer, as the region recorded over 16,000 cases of various types of cancer in 2024.
This marks a significant increase from the 11,000 cases recorded in 2023.
Among the most prevalent cancers are breast, cervical, and prostate cancer. Breast cancer cases surged from 292 in 2023 to 561 in 2024, while cervical cancer cases rose from 298 to 522 within the same period.
Although prostate cancer cases declined from 1,208 in 2023 to 996 in 2024, it remains the most common type of cancer in the region.
Health authorities warn that without intensified awareness and preventive measures, cancer cases could continue to rise at an alarming rate.
As part of the World Cancer Day celebration, themed “United by Unique”, Ashanti Regional Health Director, Dr Fred Adomako-Boateng, emphasized the high cost of cancer treatment.
“Although these cancers are among the leading causes of death, they are unfortunately not highlighted enough,” he said.
He urged the public to adopt healthier lifestyles and prioritize preventive measures to curb the growing burden of the disease.
