Tolon MP Habib Iddrisu has accused the Majority of attempting to intimidate the Minority on the Appointments Committee.
His comments come in the wake of the chaos that erupted during the committee’s vetting session on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
Iddrisu emphasized that the Minority is not deliberately obstructing the process but rather pushing back against what he described as the Majority’s aggressive tactics.
He described how the conflict started, noting that the Minority members were initially attacked by members of the majority.
“That day, if you watch the video, the chairman of the committee, the Minority is seated to his left and the Majority is seated to his right. That is where the problem started. They attacked our people.”
Iddrisu pointed out that the Majority Chief Whip was seen holding Alhassan Tampuli, adding to the tension.
He criticised Speaker Alban Bagbin’s unilateral decision to suspend the Minority members, calling it unfortunate and harsh.
“It is rather unfortunate that the speaker will take this unilateral decision. The speaker has outreached his powers; the suspension was too harsh. The speaker doesn’t have that power under the constitution and the standing orders,” Iddrisu argued.
Despite the tension, Iddrisu commended the Majority Leader for his efforts to resolve the issue and urged for consensus-building.
“In fact, I must commend the Majority Leader. He has shown leadership; he has exhibited that he is capable of leading us in the 9th Parliament because he reached out, and then they are supposed to meet and discuss this issue so that we will be able to see a way forward,” he said.
