Acting Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea has affirmed that the service is ready to take cholera and meningitis education to schools and other public places to sensitize individuals on the need to keep safe.
The Acting Director General who visited the Central Region to get first-hand information on the outbreak of cholera indicated that health professionals are up to the task of dealing with the menace.
The first cholera case for the Central Region was recorded on October 31 2024 in Kasoa in the Awutu Senya East Municipality.
However cumulative suspected cases for the Central Region stand at 2047 while the cumulative death toll for the region stands at 14.
According to the Central Regional Health Directorate districts such as Awutu Senya East, Assin North, Agona East, Upper Denkyira West and Gomoa West that recorded earlier cases of cholera have no active cases now instead Ajumako and Ekumfi are the new districts with active cases.
Acting Regional Director of Health Services Dr Agnes A. Anane highlighted some of the measures being put in place to deal with the menace.
“When cholera started, a team from the region had to be at Kasoa for almost a month just to support. In this recent time at Agona Swedru too, the same has been done. Mobilisation of resources from national and regional levels and then regular regional UOC meetings at all our 22 districts. With Case Management Training, we do some in-person and we do most of them online,” she said.
The water rationing situation in the Central Region is posing great danger to winning the fight against cholera as people in the region are not getting adequate water for domestic purposes, posing sanitation issues
The Regional Director for Community Water and Sanitation Agency, Dr.Ato Quansah shed light on the challenges they face.
“Because of the political season we find ourselves, a lot of road shapings were done and these have culminated in a number of leakages in our transmission lines and some distribution lines. For us to get enough water to our people, we need to quickly work on all these leakages to ensure that the volume of water we get at our production unit is able to get to our customers in the rural folks,” he said.
To combat the outbreak, Acting Director General of the Ghana Health Service Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea emphasised that they will increase sensitisation campaigns at schools and market centres while embarking on vaccinations.
“This is the time we have to collaborate and we must partner with each other. Spread the word. We are going to take the campaign to schools, market centres and all parts of the country. We will be giving national updates on cholera and meningitis,” he stated.
