Sam George, the Minister-Designate for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has outlined a roadmap to address the challenges facing AirtelTigo (AT), the telecommunications company grappling with poor management and outdated infrastructure.

Speaking during his vetting before the Appointments Committee, George attributed AirtelTigo’s current struggles to the failed merger between Airtel and Tigo, which resulted in an unsustainable business model and outdated equipment valued at over 500 million.

Despite these challenges, the Ningo Prampram MP assured that the government has already developed a clear plan to resolve the issue.

The objective is to consolidate government shareholdings into a viable and sustainable enterprise, while also ensuring that there are no job losses during the transformation process.

“AirtelTigo (AT) is a sorry example of what management of the telecommunication sector has been in eight years. Because AT is the illicit love child of Airtel and Tigo that was tried to be fused together to make it survive but still…It [AT] has end-of-life equipment of over 500 million and it is unsustainable.

“But there is a roadmap under the president to find a way where we will have no job losses and to consolidate government shareholdings into a viable enterprise in the setup,” he stated.
