Officials of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) are facing challenges in persuading parents to allow their wards to submit written reports regarding their alleged involvement in examination malpractices during the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
On Wednesday, scores of parents and students gathered at WAEC’s Northern Zonal Office in Kumasi following invitations from officials. They were asked to accompany their wards to submit written statements as part of an ongoing investigation into suspected examination irregularities.
A significant number of candidates have had their Core Mathematics results withheld, with WAEC citing suspicions of malpractice.
However, tensions flared at the WAEC offices when some parents strongly opposed the requirement for their wards to write the reports, resulting in a near-chaotic scene.
Some parents had travelled from as far as the Northern and Upper West Regions to participate in the exercise.
WAEC officials clarified that participation in the report writing exercise is voluntary, and parents must decide whether they want their wards to comply.
While some parents left the premises in protest, others ultimately agreed to allow their children to submit their statements.
