Fans and supporters of artistes have been urged to develop independent thinking and avoid blindly following everything their favourite artistes do.

The call was made during a discussion on The Chat on Channel One TV, where industry experts explored the dynamic relationship between artistes and their fans.

The panellists agreed that while it is natural for fans to admire and be inspired by artistes, developing an independent approach is crucial for personal growth and self-awareness. Blind loyalty, they warned, can lead to misplaced priorities and even disillusionment.

Podcaster and event host IsaaB emphasised the importance of maintaining individuality as a fan.

“The fact that you are a loyal fan doesn’t mean you should run with everything your favourite artiste does. You should have a mind of your own,” she stated.

Nigerian music lawyer Akinyemi Ayinoluwa highlighted the tendency for fans to idolize their favourite figures, noting that such devotion often stems from shared values or inspiration.

“It comes with the exuberance of belonging to a set. People tend to idolise politicians, whether politicians, sportsmen or musicians, because of something they do. You may share the same values with the person or they inspire you.

“Growing up, I wanted to be like R Kelly. At age 10, I listened to records that inspired and I became a fan. Which means I championed him, I was ready to debate anybody for him. But as I got older, I was no longer a baby fan. I still recognise and appreciate how genius he is but I can now take myself out of being a crazy fan and I can think for myself. There is no human being without fault, we all have some good and bad but you can’t just totally sell your ability to think just because you follow someone,” he stated.

Director of Bang Bang Loud, Terah “Teemo” Clottey, reflected on the inspirational role artistes play for their fans, acknowledging the potential risks of blind loyalty.

However, Clottey cautioned that sometimes, it can be dangerous if you are not self-aware of who you are. It can lead you astray if you model everything the person does without critical thinking.

“Most of these artistes have inspirational value, they inspire their fans. So, when they look at you, they see hope. Anytime the likes of Shatta Wale, Sarkodie or Stonebwoy perform and I see the crowd, the devotion with which they sing the song and the emotions, you can tell that he is a symbol of hope for them as fans.

“It is more like you have seen the person move from the gutters to where he or she is now. Just because you know that this person has been able to do it, he becomes a light to you wants to model everything that the person does. Sometimes it can be a little dangerous if you are not self-aware of who you are, it can lead you astray,” he added.
